Help us cure Type 1 Diabetes

From today to the 1st of June, EVERY donation to JDRF will be DOUBLED for life-changing T1D research aimed at finding cures and improving lives until that happens!

T1D is a lifelong autoimmune condition where your body stops producing insulin—which is what controls blood sugar levels in our bodies. It means 24/7 monitoring of blood sugar levels and manually injecting insulin into your body multiple times a day. There is currently no cure for this condition, and it affects more than 130,000 Australians alone.

I am raising money for JDRF's Giving Day to make a life-changing difference. Please help us reach our goal so that together we can create a better future for all those living with T1D.

The day everything changed

Thursday 1st Jun

7 weeks ago tomorrow, our little 8 year old warrior Rory,  was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes; it was single-handedly the greatest shock of our lives. For those of you fortunate enough to know nothing about this condition, it’s described by medical professionals as one of the biggest life-transforming chronic conditions out there. From the moment Rory was diagnosed, all of our lives changed. Every day now brings with it the risk of a medical emergency – if his blood glucose goes too high, he risks vascular and organ damage; if it goes too low, he risks falling into a diabetic coma which can be fatal. Gastro, the flu or even a mild infection could land us in hospital as an emergency. Along with managing this daily anxiety, we now need to count every carbohydrate that he eats and, through the use of an insulin pump,  give him what we calculate as the appropriate amount of insulin to manage blood glucose spikes. If he falls low, we need to urgently give him sugar…but not too much in case he spikes high again!  Sport, excitement, stress, hormones, nightmares all send his glucose levels soaring or plummeting and trying to predict and treat these waves has sadly become our new normal.

Fortunately for us, Rory seems to be the most resilient kid that I’ve ever met and has taken everything in his stride, including the multiple finger prick tests and the 5 daily injections he needed to have in his stomach before his insulin pump was fitted.  He’s back at school, rugby and swimming training (although I’m usually very close by with apple juice or jellybeans to treat an emergency low!); he’s my greatest inspiration and my husband and I could not be prouder of the way he has handled such an enormous plot twist at such a young age.
